Cabbage Thoran (Pan roasted Cabbage and coconut)

Dry Roasted cabbage with coconut can be a side dish or eaten as a salad

Tips for this Recipe

Get shredded or chopped cabbage if you do not want spend the time cutting and chopping. Both white and red cabbage can be used for this recipe

Fresh or dried shredded coconut is fine.


  • 1 lb shredded/chopped cabbage
  • ½ Small chopped red onion
  • ¼ tsp chopped garlic
  • ¼ Cup grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 step curry leaves (optional)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • ¼ tsp cumin powder
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder


  • Heat oil in a 10-12 inch roasting pan in medium heat. Add mustard seeds when oil is heated
  • Sauté garlic until golden brown. Add onion and sauté for one minute
  • Add curry leaves, cabbage, salt and stir well. Cook uncovered 10 minutes while stirring occasionally
  • Add coconut, turmeric, cumin and chili powder and mix well and spread it in the pan so that the mix will dry faster. Turn off the heat after 5 minutes
