Mohiniyattam


Mohiniyattam is an Indian classical dance form in the state of Kerala. It is performed by women. In technique Mohiniyattam somewhere between Kathakali and Bharathanatyam, in the extreme key note.

The costume for the Mohiniyattam is a cream two-piece pleated saree with a wide golden border and traditional gold ornaments. The eyes are lined dramatically for the expressions. Compared to other classical dance forms in South India, Mohininyattam gives more importance to gestural and facial acting. People says that Lord Vishnu took on the shape of a Mohini.

Mohiniattam follows many Mudras, the vocal music for Mohiniattam is classical Carnatic. The motion and posturing along with the ornamentation describe the female enchanting charms of a beautiful woman. The main expression of Mohiniyattam is sringara . Mohiniattam mature from the state of Kerala which also has an alliance with the old tradition of Lasya style of dancing. Mohiniyattam’s more, like all classical Indian dances, are in the Natya Shastra, the ancient Hindu Sanskrit text on performance arts. However, it follows the Lasya style described in Natya Shastra which is delicate, eros-filled and feminal.

It is traditionally a solo dance performed by women after great training. The song is typically in Malayalam-Sanskrit mixed-breed called Manipravalam. The vocal-ed music of Mohiniyattam involves various rhythms. There are countless compositions for a Mohiniyattam collection, most of whose lyrics  are in manipravalam, a blend of Sanskrit, Tamil,and Malayalam.
